Bible Reading: Numbers 16-18

Numbers 16:3  And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?

The devil can always find a few discontents and move them to oppose the work of God, Always!!

2 Corinthians 11:13  For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
14  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

These men and women always portray themselves as “spiritually stronger and wiser” than those in authority. But whom God appoints, He supernaturally protects!! I’ve seen this many times. It’s interesting that two of these rebels wouldn’t even come and discus their discontent with Moses but arrogantly refer to the land of bondage as the land of milk and honey. Oh how soon we forget the things we should remember and how long we remember the things we should forget!

God wanted to make sure the people got the message loud and clear. DO NOT REBEL AGAINST GOD’S AUTHORITY!

Numbers 16:28  And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.
29  If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me.
30  But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

But they just didn’t get it!! Some people can be so hard-headed and rebellious that nothing short of DEATH can change their HARD HEARTS!!

Numbers 16:41  But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the LORD.

Numbers 16:49  Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korah.

Again The Lord God showing His mind concerning leadership without question require all of the tribal leaders to bring a “rod” with their name carved on it. This would be similar to a staff that a shepherd would use. It would be a dead branch from a tree. Moses was to lay them before the Lord in the Tabernacle over night. The Lord would show His pick of Spiritual Leadership by having the rod which pertained to his choice, blossom.

Aaron’s rod not only blossomed but bore fruit (almonds) over night!

Numbers 17:10  And the LORD said unto Moses, Bring Aaron’s rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not.

Thus was Aaron and his family established as the priests of the nation Israel. As such God clarifies the benefits He will enjoy for faithfully carrying out his office.

If God is the same “Yesterday, today and forever” as the Scripture states ( Hebrews 13:8 ) then rebellion is as bad today as it was then! For someone to rebel against the one “who have spoken unto you the word of God” is a very serious thing and should be considered very carefully before engaging.
