Bible Reading: Leviticus 19-21

“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.”   Leviticus 19:1-2

Right there is Leviticus 19 in a nutshell. God calls us to follow Him; to think like Him and to act like Him. To do this we must know Him. That was the heart-cry of the Apostle Paul (Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;) and it should be the heart-cry of everyone of us. It no-doubt takes time to get to know Him, but it can be done. Have you ever noticed that a couple who have been married for 40 or 50 years not only talk and think alike, they actually begin to look alike. When we walk with God and the Lord Jesus that way, we will be holy as He is holy.

When we reach that state we will honor our parents the way they should be honored (3). We won’t even think of giving any attention to other Gods (4). Since our sacrifice was perfected in Christ the only sacrifice we offer today is the fruit of our lips ( Hebrews 13:15 and we would do that often – everyday! We would be considerate and kind to the poor and the needy (9-10). We would not steal or lie or use the name of our God in any way but prayer and praise (11-12). We would be honest in our dealings (13-15).  We would seek the best for everyone, not gossiping or grudging but loving (16-18). We would maintain a separation unto the Lord (19). We would not take sexual advantage of others and we would properly correct the error when we do (20-22).

The instruction to Israel in verses 23 thru 25 have to do with their action at that time in that place. It also had to do with establishing a line of separation and holiness to God. They were not to partake of the produce of Canaan for three years. They were to wait until any defilement of the land had been purged. Walking properly with God would prevent any and all dabbling in the occult (26). Let me be clear here, if we had the relationship with the Lord that we should have it would be marked by complete obedience to these things. The reading of horoscopes or playing demonic video games is not “just for fun,” a holy person would have nothing to do with it! A person seeking the holiness of God would not seek to look like or follow after the fads of the wicked.

This is a blight on the church today, whatever the world does the worldly Christians fall right in step. When beards and goatee’s become the popular thing in this wicked world (27) there is always that contingent of worldly Christians that follow along. When tattoos and piercings become popular in this wicked world (28), those Christians who would rather identify with the wicked and not with the holy will rush out to get theirs. Who are we kidding? God is not amused! Then those who loudly proclaim their liberty to do these wicked things because they are “free from the law” would not think of prostituting their daughters…or would they?

This same way of holy separation to God is continued through the next chapter (20). All of these holy rules of separation can be applied to todays Christian. Certainly we should seek to love the Lord, live for Him and proclaim His holiness to a wicked and Godless world. Then chapter 21 steps it up a notch, maybe several notches as it deals with the living of those who make a living at serving a holy God. May God grant us the grace to do so!!!
