Bible Reading: Leviticus 16-18

Leviticus 16 defines when, why and how the priest is to come into the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). This was Israel’s highest holy day next to the Passover. On this day the High Priest only would enter the Holy of Holies to make atonement for himself and the nation. Actually, he would enter three times. First he would have to don the holy garments required by God (I wonder if there was ever any whining from the priests because of a required dress code?) . Next the High Priest was to gain the right to offer atonement for the people by getting it himself. He was required to offer a bullock of sin offering Leviticus 16:6 to gain atonement for himself before he could offer the goats for the people. He entered into the Holy of Holies known as “The Holy Place” three times that day. First he enters with incense “that he die not” (vs 13) Next he would enter with the blood of the bullock of the sin offering for his family and him. Then he would take the goat (he had earlier cast lots between the two goats – one for sacrifice and one for scapegoat) that was for the sin offering and kill it bringing its blood into the Holy place to sprinkle before and on the mercy seat. He would then lay his hands on the scapegoat, confess the sin of the people symbolically transferring the sins to the scapegoat and turn it loose in the wilderness. All of this was completed in Christ by His sacrifice of Himself on Calvary. The believer was obedient to God’s command trusting that He would send the Redeemer.

Leviticus 17:3

The handling of blood was critical to God’s people. Any sacrifice that was to be made was to be done at the door of the tabernacle, why would God make such a requirement? IT DOESN’T MATTER!  Our God does not need a reason for making a requirement, He is God! He has the right to require anything He wants. Because I TRUST Him I don’t have to have a reason to do what He requires. If you are one who has to have a reason before you will obey, you are a rebel and do not deserve His blessing. Not only were they to shed the blood before the tabernacle, they were NEVER to eat blood.

Leviticus 18:3

Here we have it again, God wants a different people, a peculiar people. I wonder if those who proclaim their “freedom from the law” think its okay to have sexual relationships that are forbidden in this chapter? Actually our culture has already decided that these restrictions NO LONGER apply to them. They have sanctioned mankind lying with mankind (homosexuality) and have begun to penalize anyone who apposes their view. Of course if one doesn’t know Christ as their SAVIOR they have no desire nor sense of duty to God’s desire in their life. YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN!! (John 3:7)
