Daily Bible Study

As we begin this morning lets skip over some incidental stuff and go to the end of Genesis 25 where we have another example of the power of prayer. Rebekah is barren so Isaac prays and God answers in a huge way. Instead of one child, God gave two at the same time. She gives birth to Esau then Jacob. It seems that these two are at odds from their very birth. One day Esau came out of the field, probably from hunting and was very hungry. In a day when food preservation didn’t exist men could go days, maybe weeks without eating. Scripture indicates he was pretty hungry as he was willing to give his inheritance for a bowl of pottage. The birthright gauranteed the oldest a double portion of the inheritance and Esau gave his birthright to Jacob. It seems he did so not thinking the deal would really fly, but he was wrong.

As the saying goes, “like father like son” so is the case with Isaac. During a famine in the land he travels to Gerar among the Philistines. While there fearing that someone would want Rebekah due to her beauty and would kill him to have her, he lied (as his father did) and said she was his sister. Why is it some parents can think that their children will “do as they say not as they do?” The sins that you as a parent do in moderation your children will do in excess! Why woudn’t a parent want to be the best example for his/her children? Confused kids are angry kids and angry kids often times end up criminals. Show your children how to live, don’t just tell them.

After being rebuked by the Philistine king, God begins to prosper Isaac which becomes a problem for the Phiistine people due to jealousy (Gen 26:14). They tell Isaac to leave but want a peace treaty with him as they see that he is blessed by God. Don’t think for one minute Christian that  people aren’t seeing how you have something they don’t have but want. The only reason they would miss God’s blessing in your life is if you just aren’t living in a way to be blessed! But if you are living for God in Christ, your lost friends and family notice. Just as in the Philistine’s case, they are jealous of you but they respect you (if you are not a hypocrite). There may very well come a time when they will seek your peace. Stay the course!!

As time goes by and Isaac gets old, he decides that he needs to give his blessing before it’s too late. He asks Esau to hunt a deer for a special dinner during which he will bless him. This is where the foolishness of the past comes back to haunt Esau. He sold his birthright for a bowl of pottage. The blessing belongs to Jacob to whom he sold it. With his mother’s prompting Jacob deceives Isaac into believing that he is Esau and the kid that he brings for the meal is a deer. Isaac believes the lie and blesses Jacob with Esau’s blessing. While the birthright was legitimately Jaob’s he obtained it in a wrong way. It is NEVER RIGHT to do WRONG!! Some people justify the wrong they do by claiming a right (it’s owed to them, etc) but again, its never right to do wrong. The Bible says, “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. ” James 4:17 The opposite of that would be, he that knoweth to do wrong and does it…that too is sin!!

The Bible also says, “…be sure your sin will find you out.” Numbers 32:23 The vernacular of that would be “what goes around, comes around.” There is always a payday!! So often I hear a Christian whining about the way things are going when they brought it upon theirselves. THINK!! Just as you would discipline your children for doing wrong (or should) if you are a child of God doing wrong, your Father WILL discipline you (Hebrews 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.) Pray for grace and DO RIGHT!
