Heeding God’s direction to leave his homeland Abram, his wife, father and nephew have a short stay in Haran where Abram’s father dies. He then heads to Canaan being guided by God where the promise is repeated to him by the Lord; the land would be given to him and his seed and that in him “shall all the families of the earth be blessed.” How are you and I blessed by Abram? He (Abram) was the beginning of God’s redemptive plan. It was through the family of Abram that Jesus came. While mankind begins with Adam, the line to Christ comes through Abram.

Before long Abram begins to grow in blessing as God promised. There’s an underlying principle in Genesis 13 that few people see when reading. Lot, Abram’s nephew, was blessed so long as he was in close proximity to and in cooperation with Abram. They both grew in blessing until there was need to separate. The principle is that even if those who don’t believe will live at peace with those who do they will incur the blessings of the believers. America has flourished because of its respect for the people of God and their churches. But as the unbelievers become jealous and impatient of God’s people, God’s blessing will not only cease but the fortunes will reverse. We see this already beginning in this country. Genesis says that Lot chose to set-up in Sodom where the men “were wicked and sinners before the LORD EXCEEDINGLY.”

Everyone who has ever studied the Bible knows what the sin of Sodom was. It was a city of homosexuals. From this point on in the Bible homosexuals are called Sodomites. We see how God deals with this wickedness by the time we get through chapter 19. Sodom and it’s sister city Gomorrah were destroyed by God with a super-natural hail of fire and brimstone. Every culture that has ever allowed Sodomites to flourish had been destroyed. God’s judgment on America is stayed for the moment but how long it will last is anybody’s guess. I think it’s safe to say by historical proof that we are standing on the edge of destruction and the edge is beginning to give way. If revival doesn’t come soon, destruction will! God help us!!

Job 5:7 says, “Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.”  Noah had just started over when he did the foolish thing, he got drunk. In his drunken state he lay naked in his tent. This led to the sin of Ham which in turn to the curse of his son Canaan. All too often parents fail to see the damage they bring on their children by their own sin. By the time they realize it, it’s too late! Live right for your children’s sake.

The new world continued to populate and grow until they became a human force determined to make their own way to heaven. I think there is a similarity between their trying to build a tower to heaven to our trying to reach the heavens with our space program. The only difference is they did it together whereas we today are divided by culture and country. Once again God was angered at their foolishness. God put a stop to it by confounding their communication and different languages were started. One can imagine what it must have been like as they started a new day just like every day before only this time, they were frustrated by not being able to understand each other. Recently a friend of mine had a stroke. It wasn’t a major stroke but it was enough to cause his inability to say what he was wanting to say. He was trying to communicate as he always had, but it came out differently and he was VERY frustrated. I’m sure it was that frustration that led to the end of their building project.

In the process of time God begins to organize His plan for the redemption of man. He brings His focus to one man; Abram, later called Abraham. God goes to Abram and promises him a special future. He tells Abram to leave his home and head for a place He has prepared for him. Here again FAITH is necessary. There is no indication that God ever told Abram where that “place” was but Abram just BELIEVED God and started. Now I want to point out here that God made some VERY SPECIAL promises to Abram. He told him in Genesis 12:2-3 “And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”  That’s better than winning the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes! We all get those letters don’t we? I’ve been getting them for decades. “You win One Million Dollars!” then in the very small print it says, “if your number is the one picked” Then we find out that there are MILLIONS of people who got that same notice and the chances of getting struck by lightening is greater than our chances of winning the MILLIONS! But Abram’s promise was specific and personal and he BELIEVED God!! He set out, trusting God, and God never reneged on His promise.

Now something significant happens here. If we could only see this significance ourselves and follow, it would mean great blessings from God. Check in tomorrow to see what that significance is. HAVE A BLESSED DAY!!

Picking up where we left off yesterday, we see that the world had become very corrupt and God had had enough. Can you imagine how awful it must have been? We see our world moving quickly away from God and becoming a very corrupt and violent place. It makes one wonder how close we are to seeing God’s judgment fall on our land. God however found a man whose walk was pleasing and who, the Bible says, was righteous. This brings up a good question; how does one become righteous? The Bible says in Genesis 15:6 that Abram “believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” That’s what faith is, believing! Romans 4:20-24 says, “He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead”  We can follow in Noah’s footsteps by exercising faith in God.

It was this corrupt and violent earth that prompted God to start over. God instructed Noah to gather a remnant of animals along with his family, build an ark and prepare for a flood of world-wide devastation. This is where we are called upon to exercise FAITH. You either believe or you don’t! I have chosen to believe God and His Word, the Bible.

Noah and his family were in the ark for over a year.  When they came off of the ark there was nothing but them and the animals they kept alive. They were starting over. There is something wonderful about starting over! That’s the way it seems as we start a new year. We resolve to learn from the mistakes we made last year and before and refuse to make those mistakes again. But there’s a NEW START even better than that! It’s called a NEW BIRTH by the Lord Jesus. “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 If you do not know that you have been BORN AGAIN, you absolutely must take care of that immediately. How is one born again? A jail keeper in Philippi asked that same question,  “And [the jailer] brought them [Paul and Silas] out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” Acts 16:30-31 That’s how Abram got it; BELIEVE!

Reading in Genesis 4, why did God accept Able’s offering but not Cain’s? There is a growing sentiment that God should accept anything and everything we offer up. Many get offended, some extremely so, when they are rebuked. Part of the job that the pastor has is to reprove and rebuke (2 Tim 4:2). The Bible tells us that Open rebuke is better than secret love in  Proverbs 27:5 but today’s generation will have none of it. God rebuked Cain because his sacrifice was not pleasing to Him (remember yesterday…our purpose is to please God). All he had to do was seek forgiveness and fix the problem, but instead he rebelled even more, killing his brother. Again we see man going further from God instead of drawing closer for help and blessing.

As time passes Cain’s life and family goes on like a crooked river, following the least path of resistance. Meanwhile, Adam and Eve are blessed with another boy child to fill the void left by the loss of Able. They call him Seth and the Bible says, “then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.” It sounds that Seth is leading his family in a Godly direction and teaching them right. There is something attractive about a person in tune with God! Others like to be around that person.

Well Genesis 5 is the record of early genealogies and chapter 6 picks up the narrative where chapter 4 drops off. There is one record in the genealogies that stands out, that’s the account of Enoch. The Bible says he walked so close with God that the Lord went ahead and gave him entrance into heaven without a death experience. Enoch experienced back then what those who are alive and remain at the coming of the Lord will experience in the rapture. If you don’t know what the “rapture” is stay tuned…we’ll get there!

So chapters 4 and 5 clearly note two family systems; Cain’s and Seth’s, one ungodly and one Godly respectively. Chapter 6 opens with “the sons of God” taking wives from the “daughters of men” thus angering and grieving God. When we get to the New Testament church age one of the standards given is the yoking principle. Believers are not to yoke-up (marry) unbelievers. I have seen GREAT HEARTACHE result in ignoring this principle. I have seen where it’s a mistake even for Godly believers to yoke-up (marry) worldly believers. It is very, very rare where the worldly is influenced by the Godly, it usually happens the other way around. You want to see the son that you worked so hard to raise right ruin his life and testimony? Let him marry a lost or worldly girl and vice-versa!!

Some believe these “sons of God” are fallen angels who somehow mate with human women. I will be dealing with that in church this Sunday (January 7, 2018). Why not come out and hear…”THE REST OF THE STORY”

God bless, have a great day!!

I wanted to make this a daily blog but my computer programming skills are VERY limited. So instead it will be a daily devotional Bible study. It is my prayer it will be a blessing and help to all who care to read. God bless…

Why would God place a tree in the Garden of Eden that not to be used? There can only be one reason; it was to test His human creation and test it did. Unfortunately man failed the test. I’ve heard many criticize Eve for being deceived into disobedience but actually every one of us would have done the same thing. The tree just proved what we were and are: sinners deserving damnation. If that offends you its because your eyes have not been opened and you are either a blind leader of the blind, or one of the blind followers.

People like to talk about “purposes” today. There’s the “Purpose Driven Church” and the “Purpose Driven Life” etc., etc. The Bible makes it crystal clear that the purpose of man was to please and glorify God (Isa. 43:7; Rev. 4:11). While the woman was created for the same purpose, she had a strong secondary purpose. That strong secondary purpose is to please her husband. I realize that many men make it hard for their wife to fulfill her purpose but she will not feel happy and complete until she does just that.

Isn’t it interesting that after Adam and Eve disobeyed God they hid from Him. He was the only One who could help them in the mess they had made and they hid. Shame is a natural reaction to our failure until we become so hardened that we no longer care what anyone thinks. 1 Timothy 4:2 talks about a conscience that is seared with a hot iron thus losing it’s sensitivity. We are all sinners and we should seek God’s forgiveness immediately while the shame still exists or we too will become hardened, careless  and lose sight of our purpose. That’s all for today. May you seek to please God with your life today!!
