Bible Reading: Numbers 1-2

The book of Numbers is the story of stagnation. The name comes from the two events that proves the nation’s stagnation and deterioration. Those events were the numbering of Israel. The first numbering took place “in the second year” of their deliverance. The second numbering took place at the end of their 40 years of wasted wandering. Chapter 1 is taken-up with the order of the count. Our God is certainly a God of order.

Chapter 1 ends with “And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.” (Numbers 1:54 ) Chapter 2 begins with the order of The Camp. It must have been an awesome sight both from a distance and from up-close. God’s people, when in proper order will always be a wonder to behold. But as we’ll see in this book, the people fail to maintain their willingness to obey.

There is an old saying, “People convinced against their will are of the same opinion still.” It appears by these two chapters in the book of Numbers that everything is as it should be and the march to victory is set in order despite some of the difficult times they have had up to this time. And chapter two ends pretty much the same as one did; “And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses: so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, every one after their families, according to the house of their fathers.” ( Numbers 2:34 )

As you read and study this book note the similarity to the church of our day. These people began with excitement and organized into an army for God. It wasn’t long however that they lost sight of their goal and their God and ended up wandering in the desert for 40 years. The church has been wandering a lot longer than that and it’s still wandering. We can’t seem to make it to the place of complete victory.
