Bible Reading: Exodus 21-27

“…ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people…” Exodus 19:5

We said yesterday that it was important to understand the law of God. We said that the first purpose was PURITY.  The second purpose is PECULIARITY. God wants His children to be OUTSTANDING in a crowd. He doesn’t want us to be similar to or emulate those who don’t know Him or love Him. I have said it so many times and I don’t mind repeating it for the benefit of those who are willing to learn. God clearly tells us in His Word that His children are to be different on purpose. The Apostle Paul was trying to drive this home to the Corinthian Christians In 2 Corinthians 5 and 6. Consider verse 17 of chapter 5 and chapter 6 verses 17 and 18

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2 Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

All of those laws recorded in these chapters of Exodus were to make Israel a “peculiar treasure” to a God who loves and has promised to protect us. Chapter 23 ends with that promise, read verses 20 through 31 again. This might be where the idea of a guardian angel comes from. God definitely promised a guardian angel to Israel.

After delivering these first foundational laws to the people and getting their response to accept and obey them. God calls Moses up the mountain to meet with Him in chapter 24. Now prepare to be amazed right here. Initially God called not only Moses but also Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and seventy of the elders (leaders) of Israel. In verses 9 through 11 we read that these men saw God and lived. They saw God with their own eyes and yet they are compelled by a rebellious people to do evil within months! I sometimes have to deal with Christians who want to follow the worlds fads and acceptance. when confronted with this way of living they get indignant. They want NO RULES! They don’t care how it looks, they don’t care who it hurts they shamelessly demand their freedom to do what they want. THATS NOTHING NEW! People have been doing that since the beginning. It takes a dedicated, focused and determined person WHO LOVES GOD to surrender to and sacrifice for His glory.

At this point God calls Moses alone to come to Him in order to get the rest of Gods laws for glorifying Him. As Moses ascends the mountain the people watch from the ground.

Exodus 24:17 And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.

The Bible tells us that Moses was up there with the LORD for 40 days and 40 nights. This was a crash course in developing a nation for the glory of God. Men study these pages for years and still have trouble getting it all straight but Moses got it all in 40 days and nights. That tells me that God gave something special to Moses.

Detailed instruction on building and maintaining the tabernacle (a compact, portable Temple) was given to Moses. Detailed instructions on the Ark of the Covenant with The Mercy Seat, all of the furniture of the Tabernacle as well as its placement was given. How to set up the Tabernacle (direction for each corner) the lay of the tribes as they set-up camp, the garments for the priests, etc. There’s more to come but we will see in the days ahead that while Moses is being instructed by God, Aaron (who was left in charge) is being instructed by people who only care about themselves…sad!
