Daily Bible Study

“Then the Lord said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh” (Exodus 6:1).
The initial approach to Pharaoh was a disaster. Instead of gaining their freedom or even getting a consideration from Pharaoh, Moses is kicked out and the workload of the Hebrew people is increased substantially. Moses is discouraged, his people are angry and God says “NOW.” I see some parents attempting to correct their children’s behavior but the children aren’t listening then Dad gets up quickly and everything changes; now dad means business and heads are going to roll (figure of speech). Pharaoh has pushed the God of heaven into action and the LORD means business. The LORD launches an attack on the gods of Egypt. Understand this, regardless of what Oprah Winfrey or anyone else says, there is only One God and only One Way to that God everything else is just a lifeless idol. The plaques that the LORD initiates on Egypt was to show them there is no help for them in their false gods. Pharaoh was taking a position thinking that he would be protected by his gods and the true God was going to show him that his protection was worthless! It took ten plaques, each one worse then the previous in severity, before Pharaoh got the message. But wait (as the commercial says) it gets worse; even after the last plaque and the release of the Jews, Pharaoh has the audacity to go after them to bring them back.

Exodus 14:28  And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.

When the dust had settled Egypt was decimated. Not a shot was fired (arrow wise), not a sword swung but defeat was complete and Israel was free. I think if we actually knew how much God acted on behalf of His own we would be amazed and far more appreciative than we are. Once free from bondage we will see how appreciative they were.

And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.  And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?” (Exodus 15:23-24 ) They just saw God deliver them from the mighty nation of Egypt without a weapon used. They just saw God miraculously part the Red sea for them to cross on dry ground then drown the Egyptian army when they tried to cross on the same ground. So they know they are being led by an omnipotent God. Yet instead of trusting God when the first test came, they begin to murmur and complain. Have you ever noticed how easy that is; to complain I mean? How God loves us despite our obnoxious behavior is beyond me…but I’m glad HE does!! They finally get through that test and it happens again. “And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”  (Exodus 16:3)

There seems to be an attitude on the part of Israel that they deserve royal treatment from God. Think about this; If we got what we deserve we would be eternally miserable with no hope of it ever getting better. It is only by God’s amazing grace that we have anything but that. But there are those who scoff at that truth. Complaining is therapeutic for them. It doesn’t change their circumstances but it makes them feel that they deserve better. We all get caught up in it. It takes focus, moment by moment to fight off the suggestion that Satan puts in our mind that we deserve better. That is the very thing that Satan used against Eve in the Garden of Eden: “God is holding back on you and you deserve better.” When she bought into his lie, it was over! Moses tells them, “…your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD. ” If it goes unchecked, it only gets worse. “And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me. ” (Exodus 17:4) Is Moses complaining?

Here is the bottom line…pay attention! GOD DESERVES OUR PRAISE NOT OUT PROTEST!!
