Daily Bible Study

As we move on to Genesis 20 we see the cause and effect of lying. Abraham felt it necessary to lie to Abimelech, the King of a country he was passing through. This wasn’t the first time either that he lied about his wife Sarah. She must have been very pretty and he was afraid men would kill him to get her. Is there ever a good reason to lie? I guess the basis of that question is, is it ever okay to sin? Is sin ever acceptable in the eyes of God? Our culture has developed this ideology that a “little sin” is okay if the reason warrants. That too is a lie as deadly as the lie Satan told Eve in the garden. Our God is HOLY and RIGHTEOUS and we are made in His image. It is never acceptable to sin.

What this lie amounted to is a lack of trust in God. Abraham, while obeying God, was not trusting that He would protect and prosper Him. He tried to justify the lie by saying that she actually was his sister because they shared a father but withholding the fact that they were married was deceptive and deception is a lie!

Romans 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents…

If it weren’t for the grace of God Abraham would have lost his wife and possibly his life. But because of God’s grace Abraham prospered despite his sin. The grace of God is an awesome thing. When I think for even a second of how great it is I am reminded of the verse in Psalms 144:3 Lᴏʀᴅ, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!

The fact that God acted in grace and not in judgement towards Abraham does not justify or give acceptance to sin. Romans 6:1-2 says, “WHAT shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” Again, there is never a good reason to sin!

Then in Genesis 21 we see that God is able and will always fulfill His promise to His children. He had promised a son to Abraham from Sarah. They had grown pretty old and from a human standpoint it looked impossible. But the God of Heaven majors on the impossible. In fact, there is NOTHING impossible for Him. In their old age God gives them a son, Isaac.

Have you experience the miraculous grace of God in your life? If you even had to think of an answer to that question, you probably haven’t. God promises to them who call upon Him for salvation a new life. You won’t understand that until you experience it. Believe in God today and call upon Him for the gift of eternal life that He alone has made possible by His Son Jesus. Do not hesitate to call us if we can help you understand this better. God bless.
